The Return to the Workplace & Cold and Flu Season

The Return to the Workplace & Cold and Flu Season

Why is there a cold and flu season?

After more than a year away from groups or crowds, many are heading back to in-person school, the workplace, gatherings, and events. Naturally, being around more people can increase exposure to the common cold and flu, especially when the seasons are changing.

Why is there a cold and flu season? Ultimately, the common cold and the flu can occur year round. Mid fall to late spring is typically when viruses are most active due to lower temperatures and lower humidity. Spending more time indoors with more people during the colder months can contribute to spreading these viruses. Being indoors makes it easier to inhale any airborne viruses that may land on the nose or mouth.

When we are not outside in sunshine our bodies make less Vitamin D. Research suggests that Vitamin D is involved in making an antiviral molecule that limits how well an influenza virus can replicate. Studies also suggest that taking Vitamin D may help reduce the risk of getting the flu or respiratory infection.

So how can we build up our immune system's defenses to fight off the common cold and flu?

Add immune boosting foods to your diet daily

Focus on nutrient rich whole foods and try to avoid processed foods, refined sugar, and fried foods. Regularly consuming foods like garlic, ginger, citrus, turmeric, pomegranate, mushrooms, broccoli, avocado, almonds, dark leafy greens, and green tea will help to boost Vitamin C, Vitamin E, and antioxidants which are key for immune health.

Our probiotic juices, wellness shots, coconut yogurts, and Magic Mineral Broth are excellent to incorporate daily to help simplify adding immune boosting foods on a regular basis.
